As early as 1741 it was noted that "crookedness of the spine does not always proceed from a fault in the spine itself, but is sometimes owing to the muscles of the forepart of the body being too short, whereby the spine is rendered crooked. Today we see that 30% of the world population has postural problems, like lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis and flat back. This results in, or emulates from, an inbalance in the pelvis, and is often associated with a shortening of the iliacus and psoas muscles. This in turn can cause a wide range of associated illnesses. This has led me to explore the relationship between these particular muscles and the nerves, nerve plexuses, autonomic nervous system and the atuoimmune system. When the upright stance is adopted (as in the evolution of homo sapiens, or even now when a young child learns to walk) the over-stretched muscles of the pelvis can cause pain to enter the nerves. The pain is registered by the autonomic nervous system, part of which, the so-called "sympathetic nervous system assumes that an external attack to the body has occurred and triggers the "fight or flight" response. Part of the response to this is to cause the "pain gates" to be closed, so that the body is able to deal with the attacker and to fight or flee. While the conscious mind may be almost totally unaware of the pain caused by the continuing "attack", nerve plexuses deep in the body become increasingly filled with pain, which stops them from being able to carry out their allotted tasks. This may mean that incorrect signals are neing sent to various organs and structures throughout the body, This resiults in a mltitude of differing illnesses, or complications within existing illnesses. ORTHOTHERAPY endeavours to stop the cause of the pain by stretch, palpation and digital pressure, thereby allowing the normal function of the body to resume and health to be restored, complementing any other positive therapy. Orthotherapy gently explores all surfaces of the body, finding areas of restriction or pain, using pressure, massage and stretch techniques (within pain toleraces acceptable to the client) to disperse the pain, going deeper and deeper as the body allows, following the muscular, nervous, lmphatic, immune and gastro-intestinal systems and reducing pain and restrictions to normal function whereever possible. The guestt should rise from the treatment table with vastly reduced, or no pain. Within the following 24 to 48 hours almost anything can occur, including what is often described as "feeling like they've been run over by a bus"! Thus the first treatment must be limited in both depth and scope to reduce the "healing crisis". This crisis is very much decreased on subsequent treatments, usually being insignificant.
